The Journey of Mareeba Drive-In Theatre

Far Northern Theatres built the Mareeba Rodeo Drive-In, opening its gates in 1962. The company operated a circuit of theatres that extended across northern Queensland and into Papua New Guinea.

In 1972, Birch Carroll & Coyle acquired this drive-in circuit. However, by the mid-1980s, the company withdrew from the market, prompting Norm Janke to purchase the Rodeo Drive-In, which he managed until its closure in 1998. In 2002, the drive-in was revitalised under Sam Torrisi's ownership and could host up to 300 cars. By 2013, it successfully transitioned from traditional film to digital screenings.

Today, the venue is known as the Mareeba Drive-In, owned by siblings Craig Torrisi and Ann-Marie Donnelly, who continue to support the community while upholding a cherished tradition.

In a time when streaming services dominate, each visit contributes to the survival of this small, locally owned business. Thank you for helping us preserve this piece of cinema history. We eagerly anticipate welcoming you again and again.

“The Mareeba Drive-In is more than just a place to watch a movie—it’s an experience. Our goal is to create a unique atmosphere that fosters community connection. While we proudly maintain our old-fashioned charm and nostalgic feel, we also embrace sustainable practices such as recycling and composting waste.

We are equally mindful of the food we serve. Although our menu reflects a traditional drive-in café style, we are passionate about using high-quality ingredients and sourcing locally whenever possible.”
